The Brisbane-based junior golfer, who has family in Cairns, returned north to contest the local tournament after claiming last year’s title by the same margin.

“It was just the Cairns Junior Open that I was coming up to defend the title that I won last year and won by four shots last year, and I won by four shots again this year, which was good,” Mr Miller told Cairns Local News.

The tournament involved junior golfers from across Far North Queensland and beyond competing in a range of divisions.

Mr Miller said it was rewarding to successfully defend his title.

“It was good knowing that I could come back and win again, so it felt good,” he said.

Although based in Brisbane, Mr Miller said Cairns held a special place because of his family connections.

“It’s good, like, to come home and see the family, and it’s even better to get a win away from Brisbane, where I’m from. So, it’s good to come see the family, watch me win. So, yeah.”

Mr Miller said one of golf’s biggest attractions was the challenge of continually improving.

“I feel it’s really self-challenging, so like I can go work as hard as I want, and like I know that I can get the results I’m after, so like it’s good to have something always to work towards.”

The young golfer also highlighted the growing participation of Indigenous golfers, noting that competitors in Sydney and Melbourne were competing in the national Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander championships.
