Wreath-making classes add to occasion
THE Cairns RSL sub branch partnered with White Lady Funerals and Roses Only to host a hands-on floral wreath workshop ahead of ANZAC Day, bringing volunteers and community members together in remembrance of the fallen.
Held on Friday 24 April, the event saw ladies from the sub-branch membership, volunteers and Legacy gather to hand-make their own wreaths for ANZAC Day services.
Under the guidance of Roses Only’s head florist, Tijn Meulendijks, participants worked with native fresh greenery and flowers while learning techniques to create personalised floral tributes.
Each attendee crafted a wreath to lay on ANZAC Day in honour of those who served.
Lee Rawhiti, of the Cairns RSL, said the event helped strengthen connections within the organisation.
“Seeing our dedicated volunteers come together for an enjoyable day was wonderful. We so appreciate the work they do for our organisation and it was a pleasure to keep that camaraderie and friendship building through this event,” Ms Rawhiti said.
White Lady Funerals location manager Tania Cobham said the experience was meaningful for those involved.
In the meantime, St Andrews Catholic College marked ANZAC Day with a commemoration service on Friday 24 April, bringing together students, defence families and community leaders at its Redlynch campus.
The service was attended by a range of dignitaries, including HMAS Cairns officers, RSL and Legacy representatives, as well as local and state politicians.
The college said its strong ties to defence families gave the service particular significance, with many students connected to current and former service personnel.
The annual event provided an opportunity to reflect and recognise those who have served and continue to serve.
