Women’s league starts
NORTHERN Pride will return to Barlow Park on Saturday for a rugby league double-header featuring the launch of the club’s 2026 BMD Premiership campaign and a key Hostplus Cup clash against the Wynnum Manly Seagulls.

The day will begin at 1.20pm when the Northern Pride BMD Premiership side opens its season against South Logan Magpies before the Hostplus Cup team takes the field at 3pm.
The Pride heads into the round after a 22-all draw with the Tweed Seagulls and sits fifth on the Hostplus Cup ladder as the competition moves deeper into the season.
Saturday will also mark the official start of the Northern Pride’s 2026 BMD Premiership campaign, with nine players set to make their senior debut for the club.
Northern Pride chairwoman Kym McPhee-Smith said the women’s program was creating opportunities for athletes across Far North Queensland.
“This jersey represents far more than rugby league. It represents community, resilience and opportunity. Every time these players take the field, they’re showing young girls across Far North Queensland that there is a future for them in our game,” she said.
The women’s squad enters its second season with a mix of experienced players, emerging talent and nine debutants.
Northern Pride CEO Garreth Smith said the occasion highlighted the club’s growth and its pathways programs.
The club will also celebrate Queensland Day by recognising James Frazer, who has been selected in the Queensland Country side for the City v Country representative clash at Sunshine Coast Stadium.
“James’ selection is a fantastic achievement and one that the entire club is proud of,” Smith said. “Having one of our own represent Queensland Country on Queensland Day is something our members, supporters and community can take great pride in.”
Smith said the double-header would provide an opportunity to showcase both the men’s and women’s programs.
“Our Hostplus Cup side continues to build momentum and our BMD team now gets the opportunity to launch its season in front of a home crowd,” he said.
“We’re particularly excited to welcome nine new players into the Pride family this weekend and look forward to seeing them represent the club for the first time.
“We encourage all rugby league fans to come down, support both teams and help create a great atmosphere at Barlow Park.”
