Weekend of celebrations
THE largest population of Papua New Guinea outside of the Pacific nation – in Cairns – has celebrated the nation’s 50th Independence Day.

While Port Moresby was the epicentre of national celebrations, Cairns mirrored this joy with a series of events that showcased the deep-rooted connection between Papua New Guineans abroad and their homeland.
The celebrations last weekend started with the 50th Independence Ball at the Pullman International Hotel.
The ballroom was a kaleidoscope of red, black and gold, the national colours of PNG.
Guests donned traditional attire, including meri blouses, woven bilums and island dresses, each piece telling a story of cultural pride. The evening featured heartfelt speeches reflecting on PNG’s journey since 1975, traditional dances that transported attendees back to the villages and live music that had everyone dancing.
The following day, the spirit of independence continued at a community festival in the park.
Stalls lined the grounds, offering a variety of PNG delicacies, handcrafted jewellery, traditional clothing and artefacts.
The air was filled with the sounds of kundu drums as sing-sing groups from different provinces showcased their unique dances and songs.
Attendees, many dressed in traditional attire, celebrated the rich tapestry of PNG’s diverse cultures.
The event was a testament to the unity and resilience of the Papua New Guinean community, even when far from home.
For many, these celebrations were more than just events, they were a profound reminder of identity, belonging and the enduring spirit of Papua New Guinea.
Despite being thousands of kilometres away from home, the Cairns community came together to honour their roots, celebrate their freedom and reaffirm their connection to their homeland.
As Papua New Guinea continues to navigate its path forward, the 50th Independence Day celebrations in Cairns served as a poignant reminder of the nation’s journey.
It highlighted the importance of community, culture and the shared commitment to a brighter future.
