One hundred skiers towed behind the iconic Hayles boat on 18 October 1986.

It was a world-first and a world record of the number of skiers being towed by one boat at one time.

Locals and visitors could hardly forget the day as throngs of onlookers turned up to watch the early morning event.

All in all, 10 skiers tumbled but the rest held the line and achieved the group record for 100 skiers at one time.

Not content with that, each skier went on again on only one ski to break the single ski record.

Cairns’ record was held until 2010 only to be beaten by 114 Taswegians on both skis. However, the single ski record remains.
