Waste plant objection
THE Barron Floodplain Action Group [BFLAG] has lodged an objection to a proposed waste-processing and renewable-energy facility in Barron, as Cairns Regional Council confirms the development application remains under assessment.
BFLAG opposes the proposed development at 1L Kamerunga Road, Barron, which it describes as a 24-hour thermal waste-processing, pyrolysis, hydrocracking and fuel-production facility on a flood-affected rural-zoned site near residential, school and aged care facilities.
The group supports appropriate waste reduction and renewable-energy initiatives in principle but has raised concerns about flooding, wastewater, air quality, odour, heavy vehicle movements and the suitability of the site.
BFLAG said the site was within the Barron River Floodplain and that SARA had sought further information about 0.2% AEP flood immunity and containment of the external pond, wastewater infrastructure, chemicals, diesel and other wastes.
The group has called on Cairns Regional Council to reject the application.
“In conclusion, for these reasons, BFLAG ask Cairns Regional Council to refuse the application,” its objection states.
