Edge Hill businesswoman Rebecca Conlan is challenging long-time president Tom Hedley for the role.

In a statement sent to members on 8 October, Racing Queensland (RQ) says it “has become aware of messages circulating to sections of the Cairns Jockey Club membership that contain information which RQ considers to be inaccurate or misleading – and which appears to influence the outcome of the committee election at the club’s annual general meeting”.

“The information suggests that a particular outcome in the election will directly influence RQ’s decisions regarding grants and future support for the club,” it said

“This is incorrect. RQ’s decisions concerning grants, funding and other club support are not made on the basis of club committee elections, but are made having regards to the relevant assessment criteria, available funding, the merits of a proposal and applicable governance and accountability requirements.

“RQ supports the right of members to participate fully in a club’s democratic processes, including expressing their views and making informed decisions about candidates for election.

“However, these processes should be conducted fairly, respectfully and on the basis of accurate information.

“Members are encouraged to carefully consider information circulated in connection with the AGM and, where appropriate, verify claims against club or RQ communications before relying on them.”

It is understood Ms Conlan has taken legal action regarding email and social media commentary about her candidacy for the presidency. She has declined to comment.

However, on social media she has thanked RQ for the statement in relation to the misinformation being circulated.
