The Pyjama Foundation is calling on the community to step forward and help change the lives of children in foster care by becoming volunteer mentors, known as “Pyjama Angels”.

The foundation’s ‘Love of Learning Program’ pairs trained volunteers with children in foster care for weekly visits, to help build consistency, support and a safe space to learn.

Far North Queensland coordinator Joeleen Bettini said the Cairns community was perfectly placed to make a meaningful difference.

“We’re asking locals to give just one hour a week,” she said.

“That small commitment can have a life-changing impact for a child who’s been waiting far too long for someone in their corner.”

The foundation regularly holds training sessions in Cairns to equip new volunteers with the skills and confidence to begin mentoring.

No teaching experience is required, just patience, empathy and a genuine desire to support a child.

Already, 52 children are receiving support, but there was an urgent need for help for another 43 students, founder and CEO Bronwyn Sheehan OAM said.

She said the latest foundation research showed the program was helping.

The Children and Young People Survey 2025 found 87% of children felt more supported, connected and empowered, 100% show improved decision-making and were more likely to make positive choices, 90% reported increased confidence, 95% demonstrated improved literacy skills and were reading for pleasure and 92% had improved attitudes towards learning.
