$7.6m beach renewals
HOLLOWAYS Beach as well as Trinity Inlet will have its shores rehabilitated as part of a $7.6 million funding package announced by the Australian and Queensland governments.
Sand dredging, backfill and buffering will help restore 600 metres of eroded coastline at Holloways Beach south, with similar efforts at Second Beach at East Trinity while two rehabilitation projects along the Cassowary Coast will focus on clean-ups, “nature-based solutions” at Cardwell, led by traditional custodians and beach restoration between Cardwell and Flying Fish Point.
The funding follows the region’s coastline being badly damaged by the 2025 North and Far North tropical low.
Federal Emergency Management Minister Kristy McBain said coastlines were vital to the identity and livelihoods of these communities. She said the funding would help ensure they were restored to their natural beauty and strength.
Federal Member for Leichhardt Matt Smith MP said when severe weather events hit FNQ shores, the coastline was the first to bear the brunt.
“We all saw the shocking footage of Holloways Beach with the sand washed away and exposed tree roots,” he said.
