$5.3m in drainage upgrades

MORE than $5.3 million in vital drainage and water main improvements are being delivered by Cairns Regional Council through state government funding.

The works are being funded under the 2024–27 ‘Works for Queensland (W4Q)’ program to improve the reliability, safety and performance of essential underground infrastructure across multiple suburbs.

The funding involves three key programs: refurbishment of water main infrastructure, culvert renewals underground stormwater renewals,

Strategic replacement ($3.5m) of aging and deteriorating water main infrastructure to reduce breaks, leaks and pipe failures, and improve long-term service reliability includes Brinsmead, Bayview Heights, Manoora, Brinsmead, Holloways Beach, Bungalow, Earlville, Portsmith, Yorkey’s Knob and Bartle Frere.

Renewing aging culverts ($1m) to improve water flow and safety, better manage flooding and protect sensitive ecosystems, includes Portsmith, Edge Hill, Gordonvale, Palm Cove, Stratford, Cairns City, Earlville and Kewarra Beach.

Renewing underground stormwater and other similar works ($850,000) includes Portsmith, Bungalow, Whitfield, Manunda, Trinity Beach, Yorkey’s Knob and Edge Hill.
