The second clinic will be open over extended hours, seven days a week, with no appointment needed and all patients will be fully bulk-billed.

The clinic will service the northern suburbs of Cairns and take pressure off the Cairns Hospital, filling an important gap in services across extended hours and over the weekend.

The tender process is being led by Northern Queensland Primary Health Network to identify a provider, which is open to general practices, community health centres and Aboriginal community-controlled health services until 29 September.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler said the Cairns South Medicare Urgent Care Clinic had already seen over 28,500 patients.

Member for Leichhardt Matt Smith said the opening of the tender was “really exciting, given how many presentations the Cairns South clinic has had”.

“Servicing the northern suburbs, will take pressure, not just off the Cairns South UCC, but also the hospital, as it will give easier access for those in the Northern Beaches and even travelling from the Kuranda Range,” he said.
