The three and a-half day event during the school holidays removed 940 tilapia from local waterways.

Councillor and Innisfail Game Fishing Club president Nicholas Pervan said he appreciated the continual support from the community and local businesses for their sponsorship and participation during the event.

“I am always excited to be involved with this event that benefits both the community and the environment,” he said.

“The tilapia tournament is a great way to get children and young people active within the community during the school holidays and educate them about the tilapia that invade our waterways.

“Johnstone River Community Gardens has also been a significant contributor to this event, assisting with the removal of the tilapia and turning it into compost through the process of fish lasagna.”
