Tight matches herald start of summer’s top class cricket
IT was a weekend of tight contests and standout performances in Cairns first grade cricket, with Barron River Cricket Club claiming a thrilling last-over victory against Cairns Rovers.

Cairns Cricket CEO Daniel Freebody said Barron secured the win dramatically, finishing nine wickets down and scoring the winning run with two balls to spare.
“Barron were nine down and got the last run with two balls remaining,” Mr Freebody said.
“It was a really exciting game that ebbed and flowed in momentum.”
Rovers batted first, setting a total of 166, before Barron made a solid start at 2 for 87 in reply. A collapse saw them lose 4 for 19, swinging the momentum back to Rovers, before Barron’s lower order steadied the chase.
Captain Tim Ward led from the front with a composed 50, while Jordan Fulton added a crucial 15 not out to see his side home.
Rovers’ Marcus Berryman impressed in defeat, top scoring with 55 and taking 3 for 25 off 7.4 overs in an excellent all-round performance.
Elsewhere, Norths and Mulgrave both recorded comfortable wins in their respective matches.
Mr Freebody said there was a healthy crowd turnout across the venues.
“It doesn’t really compare to AFL crowds, but it was a decent turnout and a good atmosphere across the grounds,” he said.
Looking ahead, Cairns cricket fans can look forward to more action this weekend, with the CFM men’s representative team set to take on Townsville at Griffiths Park.
“Our rep men will face Townsville here in Cairns and our women’s competition continues to grow strongly. They play every weekend,” Mr Freebody said.
“Our rep women’s side will also travel to Mackay in three weeks.”
With close finishes and consistent performances across the grades, the 2025 Cairns first grade cricket season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive in recent years.
