Three mates in finals of indoor golf titles
A CAIRNS deputy principal, teacher and crocodile farm manager will represent Far North Queensland at one of the southern hemisphere’s biggest indoor golf competitions after qualifying for the 2026 X-League Championship.
Chris Lees, Ryan Moresco and Adam Williams will travel to Brisbane to compete against eight of the country’s top teams at the 14th annual X-League Championship on 7 and 8 August at X-Golf South Bank. The championship is the culmination of a season involving more than 1700 players from across Australia and New Zealand.
Long-time members of Cairns Golf Club, the trio have competed together for years, with golf becoming a regular topic of conversation during their weekly rounds despite their very different careers.
“People are always surprised when they hear what the three of us do for a living, but once we get to golfing, we’re just mates having a hit and a laugh,” Mr Lees said.
“Despite how different our days might look, we’re all chasing the same thing when we get together – and this year that’s resulted in us becoming champions.
“We’re really proud and we’ll do our best to bring the win home for Cairns.”
Founded in 2012 by Melbourne brothers Ben and Charles Styles, X-League began with just 30 competitors and has since grown into what organisers describe as the southern hemisphere’s largest indoor golf competition.
X-League coordinator Nick Treble said the competition continued to attract players from a wide range of backgrounds.
“What makes the X-League special is that every team has a unique story. Some are families, some are workmates and others are lifelong friends,” he said.
“Technology has helped make competition more accessible, but at its heart, X-League is about everyday people getting the chance to represent their community. It’s always a real buzz for our finalists and we’re really excited to see how the championship weekend plays out for its 14th year.”
