Thank Guinness, it’s Friday
A NEW Irish bar has opened in the heart of Cairns, with Murphy’s Pub transforming the former Empire arcade into a sports-focused venue aimed at locals, visitors and travellers seeking live sport, food and entertainment in the city centre.

Following an extensive renovation, the venue has been redesigned with new signs, custom furnishings, timber finishes, stained-glass details and a traditional Irish-style bar, complete with Guinness harp taps.
Murphy’s Pub will broadcast a range of sporting events, including NRL, State of Origin, international football, rugby union, and UFC. Multiple screens are located throughout the venue, including a large feature screen.
Venue manager Shaun Aspinall said the venue had been created as a gathering place for the community.
“We’re proud to be opening Murphy’s Pub as a destination for everyone – from local workers and sports lovers to visitors and groups,” he said.
“The pub has been designed to feel like a true local, full of character and warmth, where Cairns residents can gather and tourists can feel at home.
“Whether you’re here for the sport, live music or a Guinness with friends, there’s always something happening at Murphy’s Pub.”
The menu combines traditional pub favourites with Irish-inspired dishes. Alongside steaks, chicken parmys and burgers, patrons can order spice bags, beef and Guinness pies and classic sambos.
The venue also features booth seating with individual screens, pool tables, live Irish music sessions and outdoor seating along 86 Sheridan Street.
To mark the opening, a locals launch weekend is from Friday 3 July to Sunday 5 July. The Ireland v Wallabies match on Saturday is expected to be a major attraction, with live music scheduled before the game.
