Talented artists vie for annual awards
THE 78th Cairns Art Society Annual Awards Exhibition at the Cairns Art Gallery opens to the public on 31 January to 8 March 2026.

The annual exhibition features more than $9000 in prizes and showcases artworks by artists from across Far North Queensland. All works on display will be available to buy, with the exhibition running until 8 March.
Established in 1931, the society has been operating for 78 years and has played a longstanding role in the development of the local arts community.
Acting president Mark Willems said the society’s longevity was driven by its members' dedication.
“I think that the dedication of the artists over the year to keep it going,” he said.
Mr Willems said the society was formed at a time when there was little formal arts infrastructure in the region.
“In the very beginning, there wasn’t a real art scene, and so local artists decided to get together and make this happen,” he said.
Asked about the current state of the arts in the region, Mr Willems said it remained strong.
“It’s very much alive and well,” he said.
He said the exhibition attracted many entries each year and a selection panel of three judges chose 60 works for display due to space limitations at the art gallery. Winners will be announced on opening night.
Mr Willems said events such as the annual awards were vital in providing exposure and opportunities for artists outside major cities.
“There are so many incredible artists in Cairns,” he said.
The official opening night is on Friday 30 January. Doors will open at 5.30pm, with the opening event and awards presented from 6pm. It is free but RSVPs are appreciated.
