The handicapped race, held as part of the Stingrays meet at Woree Aquatic Centre and hosted by Stingrays, pitted the fastest swimmers on the day in their age groups against each other based on times.

Club representative Jeanette Crumpton said the format gave every competitor a chance.

“Because it’s handicapped, it kind of gives everyone a chance at winning. All the clubs had representatives, so everyone was cheering.”

Clubs from across the FNQ region took part in the meet.

Ms Crumpton said the dash for cash was “pretty cool”, with strong support from swimmers and spectators.

Sophie Crumpton finished first in the girls’ division, while Liam McNamara placed second in the boys’ division.

Ms Crumpton said Sophie, an S6 multi-class swimmer, benefited from the handicapped format.

“She ended up winning. Was the fastest girl there,” she said.

On the day, the swimmers competing were the fastest boys and girls in their respective age groups, with prize envelopes presented following the race.
