At a press conference early this week, the MPs stressed that victims will now be placed at the centre of the justice system.

Key measures include on-the-spot protection orders, GPS monitoring of repeat offenders, and the introduction of recorded video evidence. Initially, 150 GPS trackers will be trialled in Townsville and Caboolture, with Cairns expected to follow due to its high incidence of DFV, which has increased from 60,000 cases to 192,000 over the past 12 years.

Ms James said the reforms “deliver immediate protection, tracking the most dangerous offenders, and easing the trauma of court.”

Mr James emphasised the importance of a timely police response and support, noting that the reforms will reduce administrative burdens, allowing officers to spend more time assisting victims.

The MPs also highlighted protections, such as exclusion orders to keep offenders away from homes and the right of appeal within 28 days to safeguard due process. These measures aim to restore safety, accountability and dignity for victims.
