With international borders reopening and international students beginning to return to Cairns, the timing of the appointment is essential for the Cairns economy to benefit from the global market. Janine Bowmaker, President of Study Cairns and respected advocate for the International Student market, said it was critical to boost the education market.

“The International Student market is of huge significance to our region,” Ms Bowmaker said.

“The reopening of international borders, combined with the essential return of international flights, gives us a remarkable opportunity to market our dynamic educational and ancillary services to the world.

“The appointment of Linda to this role will ensure Study Cairns achieves their progressive goals.”

Ms Bowmaker received an award from the Cairns Regional Council during the Australia Day Awards in 2021 due to the work that she, and the Study Cairns team, undertook to provide care for International students impacted by border closures during the pandemic.

Newly appointed Study Cairns General Manager Linda Cooper said in response to her role that it was an exciting time to explore the possibilities of the international student market.

“I am extremely appreciative that I have been given this opportunity with an organisation that I have strongly supported since its inception in 1997,” Ms Cooper said.

“The potential of the International Student market is enormous but, in addition to the economic benefits that impact all residents, international students are a fantastic resource for casual jobs, particularly in the hospitality industry.

“It provides them with an income whilst they’re here, which they also spend in the region, but it also provides them with the ability to increase their skills.

“But most importantly, International Students add a beautiful diversity and culture to our already multi-cultural city.

“They love being involved with our community, and it’s my role, on behalf of the Study Cairns team, to ensure that they have an amazing experience and become global ambassadors, which ultimately helps us all,” she said.
