That’s the question FNQ Vocational Academy is asking local students, who are ready to take their future to new heights, whether they see themselves in the cockpit, behind the controls of a drone or working on the tarmac.

Students and their families are invited to explore the possibilities of the aviation industry at the FNQ Vocational Academy aviation open day tomorrow (Saturday, July 26) at the Cairns Aviation Skills Centre.

The program, starting in the second school semester this year, provides year 11 and 12 students with the opportunity to earn both a Certificate II in Aviation (ground operations and services) and a Certificate III in Aviation (remote pilot), setting them up for careers in airport operations, drone piloting and beyond.

Academy deputy principal David Otto said it was a major win for local students with big ambitions.

“We’re opening the hangar doors to a whole new world of career opportunities,” he said.

Students in year 11 in 2025 can enrol for immediate commencement, while year 9 and 10 students are encouraged to attend the open day and begin planning for the 2026 intake.

The open day will be hosted from 10am until 2pm at the Cairns Aviation Skills Centre in general aviation.
