Tough Game For The Bulls

The Mareeba United Football Club travelled away on Sunday to take on table toppers Edge Hill United.

Solomon Islands International Richard Fono came off the bench to score on debut for the Bulls but it wasn’t enough for Coach Ang Tatti.
Solomon Islands International Richard Fono came off the bench to score on debut for the Bulls but it wasn’t enough for Coach Ang Tatti.

The Match at Tiger Park and the 4pm kick off caused havoc with both sides having to deal with glaring sunlight as the ball was lost mid-flight on numerous occasions.

The Match started at a frantic pace with both sides trying to settle in quickly with both Josh De Nittis and Wayne Srhoj marshalling the troops well. Mareeba had some early half chances but failed to capitalize.

A soft goal in the 36 th minute by McDonnell sent the Tigers into the break with a 1-0 half time lead. The second half began promising for the Bulls as they tried to get an equalizer but squandered may opportunities in front of goal.

In two terrible minutes and a total lapse of concentration, the Tigers through Casson and Taylor put the home side up by three. A surprise substitution in the 70th minute saw Mareeba’s new signing take the field in the form of Richard Fono a current Solomon Island International who is in the county on a work visa.

The crafty international showed his sheer talent and was unlucky not to score with his first touch of the ball. He did score in the 83rd minute on debut but not enough to rescue the Bulls from a 3-1 defeat. Bulls Coach Ang Tatti said “A tough game, that five minute lapse in the second half cost us the match apart from that we had our chances again but we were not clinical enough in front of goal.”

“We kept Richard quiet for a while, he has been training with us for the last few weeks and will bring a bit more spark to the forward line and he did get on the score sheet in his first game off the bench, very much a handy player to have at our disposal.”

In other matches played over the weekend the Mareeba Premier Reserves had a solid 2-0 win over the Tigers while the Premier Women’s match was a real nail bitter with Edge Hill sealing a 1-0 win with virtually the last kick of the ball.

The Bulls Premier Youth got back on track with the 3-0 win over the Tigers. On Friday Night in the local Tablelands derby, the Bulls Second Division had a 1-0 win over the Atherton Eagles. The Men’s third Division played out a 1-1 draw with Stratford United, the Mareeba Ladies reserves had a 3-1 loss to Marlin Coast Rangers and the Colts played out a 0-0 draw against Edge Hill United.
