Mr Marino, who was joined at today’s announcement by Cairns Cycling Club vice-president James Mort, said cycling is one of the fastest growing sports in our region.

“The current lighting at the Smith Park track was installed in the 1960s and is unsuitable for today's requirements,” Mr Marino said.

“That’s why an LNP government will invest $145,000 to install new LED lighting around the track to ensure the cycling community have the best facilities possible.

“The new state-of-the-art lighting will allow for night training and attract additional cycling competitions to the region.”

Mr Marino said the investment would also allow the club to further develop its junior development squads, women in cycling and cyclists with a disability programs.

“This investment builds on the $418,500 investment delivered by the Morrison Government to construct a brand-new clubhouse, amenities and administration block,” he said.

“The improved lighting and recently-completed clubhouse facilities will bring the venue into the 21st century and complement recent track improvements.

“This will be a great asset for the community and foster new opportunities for our youth and those wanting to participate in in cycling.

“This is part of my comprehensive plan to deliver much-needed community and sporting infrastructure across our city.

“The only way to ensure the lighting upgrades at the Cairns Cycling Cub is delivered is to change the government on October 31.
