The proposal is to establish one single committee empowered to administer all aspects of the code across all levels from Under 6 to Queensland Cup team.

The associations considering amalgamation include Cairns District Senior Rugby league, Cairns District Juniors, Innisfail Juniors and Eacham Juniors. Proposals of a similar nature have been considered previously without unanimous acceptance.

Rugby league in Cairns this year has struggled due to an early cancellation due to COVID-19. A shortened senior competition was conducted when Tully, Cairns Brothers and the Pride combined to stage the Ken Frost Lightning Challenge.

This 6 week competition provided valuable match time for players. The Challenge featured A Grade from the three teams, with the Northern Pride fielding two team to fill out a strong four team competition. The Reserve Grade as contested between Tully Tigers and Cairns Brothers.

Brothers Football Manager, Tim Rumford was pleased with the shortened competition. “The Challenge Cup gave the boys a chance to get engaged and set up the 2021 season. “The early call to suspend the season was made for the right reasons, so the Challenge Cup was a great addition.

Cairns Brothers suffered a few injuries during the Challenge which impacted upon their performances; however Rumford was pleased with the form shown by both Jordon Biodi-Oda and Theo Majid playing in the halves for Cairns Brothers.
