The exhibition centres on the gallery’s most recent Collection acquisition, Dibirdibi Country 2009, (pictured) a vibrant work by the late celebrated Kaiadilt artist Sally Gabori.

Born on Bentinck Island in the Gulf of Carpentaria before the arrival of missionaries, Ms Gabori only began painting in 2005 at the age of 80.

In the decade that followed, she became widely acclaimed for her striking depictions of her beloved Country.

A gallery spokeswoman said the addition of Dibirdibi Country to the permanent collection represented a significant cultural legacy for the region, made possible through the support of the Cairns Art Gallery Foundation.

The major exhibition also features five significant works from Queensland Art Gallery, alongside pieces on loan from Gold Coast’s Home of the Arts and Townsville Art Gallery.

Guests at the preview will be among the first to view the show while enjoying drinks and canapés.

Event details: 12 September, 5.30-7.30 pm – members $40, non-members $55
