Stretches between Riverston Rd in Gordonvale and Caleb Shang Bridge in White Rock are now open.

The cycleway – renamed the Luke Azzopardi Cycleway after the late Gordonvale identity – will eventually connect Gordonvale to the Cairns CBD.

Works to open the two sections included soil nailing works on Bana Gindarja Creek, as well as intersection improvements at Mill and Thomson roads and improvements to the existing pathway.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg said the government was committed to ensuring “safe passage for active transport users throughout the state and the completion of two more sections of the bikeway was an example of that”.

“We want to ensure that we’re looking after all road users and this will provide the essential missing link connecting the suburbs to the city,” he said.

Member for Mulgrave Terry James said it was “great to see this work continuing and cycle paths extending for such long stretches of the Mulgrave electorate”.

“I know that many families utilise these paths regularly and get great pleasure and exercise from them,” he said.
