The production pays tribute to some of the biggest names in soul music, including Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, Chaka Khan, Prince, Michael Jackson and Aretha Franklin.

For Mr Gould, the music is deeply personal.

“You’re not a singer unless you’ve been influenced by Stevie Wonder, you’re not a singer unless you’ve been influenced by Aretha Franklin,” he said.

“They’re the roots of music, they are the blueprints that we all forget to follow, so to be able to pay homage to all these incredible artists ... I wouldn’t be the singer I am today without those sort of influences,” Mr Gould said.

He said Prince also held a special place in his career.

“‘Purple Rain’ in particular was the song that I auditioned for Australia’s Got Talent with, so that has a special place in my heart.”

Rather than impersonating the legendary performers, Mr Gould said the show was about celebrating their lasting impact.

“There’s only one Stevie Wonder, there’s only one Aretha Franklin. We’re not impersonators, we’re just continuing to celebrate their legacy.”

Mr Gould will share the stage with singer and performer Prinnie Stevens, whom he has known for many years.

“She’s just a pro, she’s a lot of fun, she’s a sweetheart and she’s a very soulful singer,” he said.

“When I was putting together a show called Legends of Soul, I needed to have someone that had that soul inside of them and she’s definitely got that.”

Backed by a live band featuring Grammy-nominated musical director Todd Schroeder, Jessica McPherson-Riley, Jonathan Skovron, Ben Cripps and Jeff Consi, the performances form part of The Reef Hotel Casino’s 30-year celebrations.

Mr Gould said performing as part of the milestone was special.

“The (Reef Hotel Casino) team, I mean, Bruce (Stewart) is a legend. I love Bruce. I love working with Bruce,” he said.

“It’s an iconic space. Lots of amazing artists have walked through those doors and to be part of this celebration is really special. I hope it continues for many, many years.”

Audiences can also expect every performance to be different.

“I don’t take myself too seriously. It’s always a fun time,” Mr Gould said.

“You never know what you’re going to get at the Greg Gould show. No two shows are the same. You’re always in for a unique experience,” he said.
