Shrine proudly 100-years-old
ONE hundred years of the Cairns Cenotaph is being marked today.

The Cairns RSL sub branch is inviting the community to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Cairns Cenotaph, described as “a landmark that has stood at the heart of remembrance for generations of Cairns residents”.
Originally constructed on Abbott Street in 1926 before being relocated to its current Esplanade location in 1972, the Cairns Cenotaph has served as the city’s central place of remembrance for a century.
It honours the men and women who served, suffered injury or made the ultimate sacrifice during war, service and conflict.
The anniversary service will include:
Re-enactment of the 1926 consecration
Historical reflection on the Cenotaph’s significance
Sunset ceremony conducted by HMAS Cairns
Wreath laying
Community reflection and remembrance.
Sub branch president Nathan Shingles said the anniversary was an important milestone for the entire Cairns community.

“For 100 years, the Cairns Cenotaph has stood as a place of reflection, remembrance and respect for those who served our nation,” he said.
“It is more than a monument, it is part of the identity of Cairns.
“Generations of families have gathered here on ANZAC Day and other significant commemorations to honour loved ones, remember sacrifice and stand together as a community.
“The Cenotaph connects our past with our future. It ensures the stories and sacrifices of our servicemen and women are never forgotten.”
It follows a special Indigenous veterans ceremony on Saturday last week.
The event began with a welcome to country by Aunty Jeanette Singleton and prayer by chaplain Andrew Schaper.
A wreath laying followed by a smoking ceremony and didgeridoo performance by veterans Jesse Coleman and Brodie McIntyre.
The official address was delivered by Vietnam veteran James Canuto, of Yarrabah, whose words reflected the courage, resilience and contribution of Indigenous servicemen and women throughout our nation’s history.
The Catafalque Party from the 51st Battalion provided a solemn and dignified tribute, adding to the significance of the occasion.
The 100th anniversary will be held on Friday 5 June 2026, 5pm at the Cairns Cenotaph.
