School’s profits benefit charity
TRINITY Anglican School (TAS) year 9 students have turned their $20 business ideas into a $2514 profit for the Far North Queensland Hospital Foundation (FNQHF) after the school’s inaugural $20 Boss Market Day.

Twenty-five student businesses took over the school’s White Rock campus on 18 September, selling products ranging from slime and shell frames to dog treats, body scrubs and bracelets.
The market was accompanied by live music from the school band as students tested their products with customers. The event marked the culmination of the Young Change Agents $20 Boss program, in which year 9 students worked in teams of three or four throughout the term to develop their business concepts.
Each team began with $20 and learned about financial literacy, innovation, sustainability, marketing, teamwork and leadership while developing and preparing their products for market.
Year 9 student Gia Naido and her team chose to make slime because it was “fun, creative and appeals to a wide variety of people”.
“Today’s market is really fun. $20 Boss has been a great opportunity because it has taught me real-world skills like communication, teamwork, budgeting and how to run a business,” Gia said.
“I have learned that running a business is more than making a product. It is about understanding your customers, managing your money and working together as a team,” she said.
TAS careers and VET coordinator Cameron Murphy said the program gave the year 9 cohort practical experience in developing an entrepreneurial idea from concept to market.
“They have developed an idea, pitched it to the school’s leadership team, made the product and sold the product,” he said.
