School riders very competitive
YOUNG mountain bike riders from across the Cairns Region continue to impress in the 2026 FNQ Interschool Mountain Bike Series, with strong local representation helping make the competition a growing success.
Craig Nissen of Crank Collective said the series had continued to grow, with more than 80 students from 16 primary schools and 10 secondary schools competing in each round so far.
“Riders from Cairns, as far south as Mission Beach and also the Atherton Tablelands, have come together to compete in a fun, supportive and inclusive environment,” he said.
“Round 1 was held at Davies Creek Mountain Bike Park in May, before competitors returned to the trails for round 2 at Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park on 26 July.
“Across both events, students tested their endurance, technical riding skills and confidence on challenging purpose-built trails.
“Schools including Kuranda State School, Saint Monicas, Yorkeys Knob State School and Yungaburra State School have been among those represented, with riders demonstrating outstanding commitment and enthusiasm throughout the competition.
“The FNQ Interschool Mountain Bike Series provides students of all abilities the opportunity to experience competitive mountain biking while developing resilience, teamwork and a love of the sport.
“Riders earn valuable points for their schools while enjoying the challenge of racing alongside students from across the region.
“Round 2 at the Atherton Forest Mountain Bike Park provided an exciting backdrop for competitors, with riders enjoying the recently refurbished trail network and high-quality mountain biking facilities the region has to offer.”
After two rounds, Freshwater State School leads the primary school standings, while St Augustine’s College currently sits at the top of the secondary school competition.
The series concluded on Sunday 6 September at Smithfield Mountain Bike Park, where riders competed for final points and the 2026 FNQ Interschool Mountain Bike Series school champions were crowned.
