Scholarships provide Catholic teacher roles
CATHOLIC Education Diocese of Cairns is continuing their mission to attract, support and retain graduate teachers in the region with their education scholarship program.

The program, which was introduced after foreseeing a nationwide teacher shortage, has helped to grow and retain their own student talent, according to Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns director workforce capability Bronwyn Buckley.
“Our scholarships have been highly successful in ‘growing our own’ by encouraging students to pursue a teaching career, secure a teaching position here in Cairns and complete their return of service in our schools, while also supporting our local universities,” said Ms Buckley.
In 2025, 12 new scholarships were offered, bringing the total to more than 60 scholarships awarded to date and reinforcing Catholic Education’s commitment to future-proof teaching in the Far North.
Catholic Education Diocese of Cairns currently offers three scholarships: year 12 education scholarships, final year scholarships and change of career scholarships.
The year 12 education scholarship recipients each receive a HECS-free degree, dedicated mentoring and guaranteed employment as a teacher within a Catholic school.
The final year scholarship recipients each receive $1200, placement in a Catholic school and professional development sessions throughout the year as part of the ‘Getting Ready for Employment’ program.
The change of career Scholarship recipients each receive $20,000, guaranteed employment as a teacher within a Cairns Catholic school and mentoring from experienced educators.
