Runfest in top cricket

IT was a run-fest across Cairns in the opening weekend of the Tropic Wings first grade cricket competition, with batters dominating on flat, fast wickets.

Cairns Cricket CEO Daniel Freebody said the early-season conditions favoured batting, with most pitches playing true after weeks of dry weather.

“It was pretty high scoring this weekend, the wickets were really good and flat,” Mr Freebody said. “There were some big totals put on the board.”

In one of the standout clashes, Cairns Rovers piled on 270 runs before bowling out Cassowaries (Cascos) for 225 to claim a 45-run victory. All-rounder Brenton Edwards top-scored for Rovers with 96 runs, setting up the win.

Over at Griffiths Park, Mulgrave continued their strong form with a 266–226 win over Norths. Despite a fighting century (102 runs) from Mr Freebody himself for Norths, Mulgrave proved too consistent with the bat, with three players contributing fifties or more in a balanced team effort.

The third fixture was a lower-scoring affair, finishing 160 to 110, with no central standout performances reported.

Next weekend, attention turns to representative cricket, with Cairns’ men’s and women’s sides travelling to Mackay for the North Queensland Championships.

“We’re sending some pretty strong teams down there and looking to perform well,” Mr Freebody said.
