Right on your doorstep
FAR North Queensland locals are being invited to rediscover their region, with Douglas Shire Council reinstating the Douglas Card for May and June.

The initiative, approved at a recent council meeting, provides free ferry access for residents from Cardwell to Cooktown, including the Atherton Tablelands, to cross the river and explore the ancient rainforest walks, take a river cruise and visit destinations like Cape Tribulation.
For those who already have a card, it remains valid, and those wanting to apply can go online or in person at council offices.
The two-month extension has delighted tourism businesses north of the Daintree River, which have suffered numerous setbacks this year.
In a deputation to the council, they said they were “desperate”, with some even contemplating closing until the busier peak period unless they received a boost over the “shoulder season” of May and June.
Tourism Port Douglas Daintree executive officer Emma Tunnock said the Douglas Card would remind locals of what is “right on their doorstep”.
“For many people it’s been a while since they’ve experienced it,” Ms Tunnock said.
“This is an opportunity to slow down, stay a night or two, and truly disconnect – whether that’s camping under the stars, (or) staying with one of our incredible accommodation providers.”
“We’re encouraging locals to take the time to explore, stay longer and experience everything the region has to offer – from guided rainforest experiences and local produce to wildlife, culture and stunning natural landscapes.”
“We’re also rolling out a targeted local campaign to encourage people to rediscover the Daintree, with the Douglas Card providing a clear call to action to turn that inspiration into a weekend away or short break.”
Local operator Jaclyn Kiernan from Cape Tribulation Camping and Cape Trib Horse Rides welcomed the initiative and thanked council.
“It will hopefully be a real lifeline for businesses across the region who have had an extremely difficult start to the year,” she said.
“Let’s hope the second half of the year brings plenty of sunshine and smiling visitors back to the Daintree.”
Despite opposing the decision during the council vote, Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon acknowledged it had been a “tough period” for operators, and the council hoped the card extension would give them the “support they need to get through to the peak season.”
