Retro focus for Cairns parade
CAIRNS Festival is a vibrant 10-day celebration running from 28 August to 6 September, bringing the community together through shows, events, live music and art exhibitions, all proudly locally produced to spark joy across the city.

Cairns is turning 150 years young in 2026 and we’re calling on the whole community to help bring back one of our city’s most iconic traditions, the ‘Fun in the sun’ parade, for a special celebration this year.
The Cairns Festival was affectionally know as ‘Fun in the sun’ from 1963 until the early 1990s and drew floats and fashions of classic nostalgia.
This year residents are being invited to recreate those retro looks and help make the parade the biggest and brightest Cairns has seen.
“Whether you are inspired by vintage Cairns’ memories or imaginative visions of our future, your creativity will help bring this milestone parade to life in front of more than 30,000 spectators,” Cairns Mayor Amy Eden said.
“We’re inviting everyone to take part – community groups, schools, cultural organisations, artists, sporting clubs, businesses, neighbourhood crews and anyone with creative spirit.
“Create a float. March with your team, dance, drum, perform.”
For grand parade we’re honouring the businesses, communities and milestones that have built the city of Cairns, while also shining a light on the bright future ahead.
Think tropical colour, coastal vibes, sun soaked nostalgia and bold Cairns energy. Bright, joyful and uniquely us.
Come and join Cairns’ most spectacular event of the year.
