Cairns Local Disaster Management Group chairwoman Mayor Amy Eden said residents should get ready now before disaster season begins.

“Disaster preparedness starts at home and Get Ready Emergency Services Day is a great opportunity for Cairns residents to take action before the season begins,” she said.

“Whether you are a long-time local, new to Cairns, retired, studying, caring for family or living alone, now is the time to know your risk, make a plan and pack an emergency kit.

“Storm surge, flooding and cyclones are real risks in our region. A little preparation now can make a big difference to your safety, your household and the people around you when severe weather strikes.

“Preparedness saves lives. Having drinking water, food, medications and essential supplies ready, and knowing where to go if you need to leave, helps households respond more safely and recover more quickly.

“Our community is resilient and we look out for one another, but resilience starts with action.”

Residents are encouraged to visit the Cairns Disaster Dashboard at www.cnslocal.s.gy/Yo1pCD for live information on road conditions, power outages, flood cameras, weather warnings and evacuation information.

The Get Ready Queensland website at www.cnslocal.s.gy/jJR0NG also offers step-by-step guides and checklists to help households prepare.

Having an emergency kit means you and your family can stay safe at home for several days if roads are blocked or power is out.

Here is what you should pack:

  • Long life food and water for at least three days, more if at risk of isolation

  • Medications and first-aid kit

  • Pet food and supplies

  • If you’re in a flood-prone area know where you’ll go if you need to evacuate

  • Pack your car early and fill up the tank

  • Move valuables to higher ground.
