Remembering those who have kept the peace
THE Cairns community will come together on Monday 14 September at 10am to honour and remember the Australian men and women who have served as peacekeepers, peacemakers.
The Cairns RSL Sub Branch will host its annual peacekeeper peacemaker commemorative service on the Cairns Esplanade at the peacekeeper peacemaker plaque to the left of the RSL club, providing an opportunity for the community to recognise the dedication, courage and sacrifice of those who have worked to promote peace, protect communities and support stability in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
On 14 September 1947, four Australians deployed into the field in the Netherlands East Indies, now Indonesia, becoming the world’s first peacekeepers.
Sub branch president Nathan Shingles said the commemorative service was an important opportunity for the community to pause and remember those who have served in the name of peace. “On National Peacekeepers’ Day, we remember the service and sacrifice of all those who have served during peacekeeping and peacemaking operations,” he said.
