Event chairwoman Christina George said the news was happily received at last Saturday’s Relay for Life at Barlow Park, which ran from 1.30-11pm.

“I was rapt to announce that next year we are returning to an overnight event,” she said.

“It’s been quite a work in progress.”

The FNQ Relay for Life was shortened following COVID and renegotiations on its structure had been ongoing with Cancer Council Queensland.

While other states had returned to longer events, CCQ was “a little more cautious with the health implications and insurance required, which was understandable”, Mrs George said.

“But after four years we have worked it out, which is a really positive result.”

Last week’s event raised $128,000 – $3000 above the target – and had been a highly entertaining day. “The event went really, really well. The weather was beautiful and everyone had such a fantastic time,” said Mrs George, who marked her 25th anniversary at the event.

“I did my first Relay for Life with my mum in 2001, but sadly we lost her in 2002, so I have been doing them ever since.”

For her, the candlelight ceremony was always the highlight of the relay.

“It’s an opportunity to remember loved ones lost and a chance to renew that fight for a cancer-free future,” Mrs George said.
