Relay for Life raises $140,000
RELAY for Life Far North Queensland has exceeded its $125,000 target by nearly $15,000, despite wet, windy and cold weather.
Relay for Life president Christina George said by the end of the event, organisers, participants and supporters were “wet, exhausted and emotional”.
“There were activities we didn’t get to finish and moments we didn’t get to share,” she said.
“But despite the rather persistent precipitation and wind, our incredible relayers kept walking that track throughout the night.
“And together, we raised nearly $140,000 this weekend in the fight against cancer.
“The funds raised will help support cancer research, prevention programs and vital services for people affected by cancer, including services right here in our community.
“I fought hard to bring the relay back to an overnight event because cancer never sleeps and I believed our community deserved the opportunity to experience the true spirit of Relay For Life once again.”
Fifty-four teams involving 700 participants took part. The top fundraisers included Queensland X-Ray 2026 ($21,878), St Augustine’s College ($12,475), Helen’s Heroes ($11,701) and St Mary’s Catholic College ($5919).
