Regular skin checks are vital
LIVING in North Queensland means enjoying some of the best weather Australia has to offer, but it’s not without its risks.

Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world, with two in three Australians diagnosed by age 70.
In Queensland, and particularly sunny North Queensland, the risk of skin cancer is even greater thanks to the proximity to the equator, higher year-round UV levels and outdoor way of life.
But a Cairns Skin Centre spokeswoman said the good news was that early detection dramatically improved outcomes, which is why regular skin checks with an experienced practitioner were so important.
She said Cairns Skin Centre was recognised as one of Far North Queensland’s leading medical practice for skin cancer detection and treatment.
“The first practice in Australia to offer the services of a consultant dermatologist and skin cancer doctors, Cairns Skin Centre offers a comprehensive range of services from full skin checks, mole mapping and skin biopsies to surgical excision of skin cancers and dermoscopy examinations,” the spokeswoman said.
“In a first for the Cairns community, they also now treat more complex facial skin cancers with a cure rate approaching 99% first time, minimising damage to surrounding healthy skin.
“Performing minor procedures and aftercare onsite, Cairns Skin Centre doctors and clinicians work together to ensure patients get the best possible treatment and outcomes while prioritising patient safety and comfort.
“Cairns Skin Centre also offers a range of preventative programs aimed at minimising risk of developing skin cancer, including sun protection education and preventive advice and skin cancer prevention and screening programs.
“Between professional checks, the centre recommends getting familiar with your skin so you can notice changes early.
“Keep an eye out for new spots, or existing moles that change in size, shape or colour, become itchy or start to bleed.
“If you notice anything unusual, don’t wait for your next scheduled appointment, book in immediately so it can be properly assessed.
“Certain factors can further increase your risk of skin cancer, including fair skin, a history of sunburns, a large number of moles and a family history of the disease.
“If this is the case, then you may require a more frequent screening schedule with your doctor.
“Most skin cancers develop slowly and often without obvious symptoms in their early stages, so pairing these habits with an annual skin check at Cairns Skin Centre is the most effective way to catch changes early, when treatment is simplest and success rates are highest.
“Accepting new patient referrals, contact Cairns Skin Centre today to book your next skin check.”
