It was Coles’ single biggest fundraising event ever, the supermarket and its customers have raised a record $6.7 million nationally for FightMND, with $252,000 of that raised in Queensland, through the sale of beanies and Coles Brand fresh pork to support research into finding effective treatments and a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.

Cairns was among the top 10 highest fundraising regions in the state, having raised nearly $20,000 for FightMND at stores including Cairns Central, Redlynch, Earlville, Edmonton, Westcourt, Smithfield, Mt Sheridan, Clifton Beach and Port Douglas.

To celebrate funds raised, Coles State General Manager, Cairns Regional Manager and store managers from across the region whipped out their winter gear and participated in a freezing cold icy giant slide challenge to raise additional funds for the vital cause and officially announce total funds raised in Queensland for the campaign period.

Coles Cairns Central store manager Cheran Walker, the man behind the initiative, said the whole team in Cairns is passionate about raising vital funds and awareness for MND.

“Coles is extremely passionate about FightMND and helping to find a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.  We’ve been a proud partner of FightMND for four years now and each Big Freeze campaign just keeps getting bigger and bigger,” he said.

“Our team members and customers get really excited every year the Big Freeze beanies come out and this year was no exception. Our Cairns region raised nearly $20,000 over the past six weeks for FightMND from the sales of beanies and Coles brand fresh pork.

“We’re super proud to have to have raised more than $5,000 at Cairns Central. Our customers have been amazing and we can’t thank them enough for getting behind the cause. Our team absolutely love seeing customers doing their shopping in their blue Big Freeze beanies.

“MND is such a horrible disease and we hope that the $20,000 raised this year will go some way to finding a cure in the near future.”
