Rangers top of ladder
MARLIN Coast Rangers maintain their position at the top of the ladder on Saturday after grinding out a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mareeba United at Pennell Field, Trinity Beach.

The Rangers entered the match as favourites against a Bulls side that had recorded only one win and a draw for the season, but what appeared on paper to be a straightforward contest quickly developed into a much tougher assignment.
Marlin Coast received an early advantage just five minutes into the game when Mareeba’s Serafini was shown a red card, forcing the visitors to play the remaining 85 minutes with only 10 men.
However, despite the numerical advantage, the Rangers found it difficult to break down a resilient and highly organised Bulls outfit.
Mareeba defended with determination and discipline, with returning veteran Wayne Srhoj making his presence felt after returning from a four game suspension.
The experienced defender marshalled the Bulls’ back line superbly and helped frustrate the Rangers for long periods.
Marlin Coast continued to press and remained patient in attack before finally finding the breakthrough in the 63rd minute.
Cooper Kennedy proved the difference, calmly finishing his opportunity to score what would ultimately be the match winner.
While the scoreline may suggest a comfortable afternoon, the Rangers were made to work hard for all three points as the Bulls refused to surrender.
The result further strengthens Marlin Coast’s reputation as the team to beat this season, but the encounter also served as a reminder that no points come easily in the FQPL Far North competition.

In another top game, after a win over Southside, Innisfail’s premier men’s team came back from a 2-0 deficit to grind out a 2-2 draw against Redlynch on 17 May at Calanna Park, Woree.
The squad has benefitted since Francesco Trotter and Cameron Epong have returned from injury. Innisfail’s second half goal scorers were the Crossland brothers, Liam and Ethan.
Innisfail Cutters coach John Cavanah said he was happy with the way the team clawed their way back in the game and nearly stole the win in the 90th minute with a strong effort by Harrison Corica.
“It was great to see the Crossland brothers scoring and the team’s determined fightback,” he said.
The club credits ex-physiotherapist Joe Van Tienen for guiding several players back to full fitness.
Earlier in the season, he helped Ethan Crossland return to form and Crossland is now flourishing in the midfield.
“I’m especially grateful to Van Tienen for helping these three players back to full fitness, they all performed admirably,” said Cavanah.
“Chris Clauss who made his debut this season has added valuable experience to the midfield.”
