Rangers in grand final win
MARLIN Coast Rangers capped off a memorable season by claiming the premier men’s grand final with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Stratford United at Stan Williams Park on Saturday night.
In a contest typical of a grand final, nerves were evident as both sides battled for supremacy, with neither willing to give an inch in their pursuit of the championship.
The decisive moment came in the 61st minute when Charlie Beverley stepped up to convert a penalty, giving Rangers the lead and ultimately securing the premiership and championship double.
For Stratford, the defeat brought a disappointing end to an otherwise remarkable season, having fought their way through the finals series to earn their place in the season decider.
Dolphins coach Pasco Rogato reflected on the result 24 hours after the final whistle, expressing pride in his players and the club’s achievements throughout the year.
“Ultimately it’s been a remarkable season, even if we weren’t able to bring home the trophy,” Rogato said.
“I want to thank the players, the Stratford committee, our supporters and those who helped me along the way.”
Rogato paid tribute to Marlin Coast, acknowledging their ability to deliver when it mattered most.
“Congratulations and well done to winning grand finalists Marlin Coast, in the end they had a touch more quality when it mattered, as well as the experience and tactics to get the job done.”
The disappointment of the grand final defeat was compounded by the departure of several Stratford players, adding an emotional element to the club’s final outing of the season.
“There was some added sadness last night as we said goodbye to several players. Thank you for being part of what we are building, and your friendship,” Rogato said.
“I wish you the very best wherever life takes you.”
Marlin Coast coach Terry Fannan praised his players for the commitment and sacrifices they had made throughout the season.
“The boys deserve every part of this win, they’ve worked incredibly hard all year and have sacrificed so much,” Fannan said.
Despite the celebrations in the Marlin Coast camp, Fannan was quick to acknowledge the performance of their grand final opponents, crediting Stratford for the season they had produced and the challenge they provided on the biggest stage.
“Stratford have been incredible all year and played exceptional tonight, so massive shouto-ut to them also,” he said.
While Marlin Coast Rangers celebrated their premier men’s triumph, Edge Hill United enjoyed an outstanding grand final weekend, claiming four championships across the remaining divisions.
In the premier women’s grand final, Edge Hill United secured an emphatic 4-1 victory over Redlynch Strikers to claim the championship. The club continued its success in the men’s under- 23 division, overcoming its grand final opponents in a penalty shootout to secure another title. Edge Hill’s women’s under-23 side also celebrated championship glory, defeating Innisfail United 2-0 in their grand final.
