Rain didn’t stop them
NEARLY 400 locals braved the rain and lifted the mood to walk and run in their best costumes to raise vital funds for breast and ovarian cancer research at the second Mother’s Day Classic.

Nothing could break the stride of the more than 370 participants who joined the second Cairns Mother’s Day Classic despite the wet weather.
This year saw an increase in registrations with 460 people and a similar number of attendees on the day as last year with 380.

Although the fundraising figures won’t be finalised until later in the year, the event organiser Amy Rein has high hopes for an increase considering the fundraising done on the day.
“The day started off wet and it came and went throughout the event but it didn’t seem to affect people too much, which was lovely,” Ms Rein said.

“We had 460 people registered for the event and we had about 380 odd there, which was amazing considering it wasn’t great weather, so we’re very happy with that.
“Everyone really got into the spirit, there was a lot of pink and it was a fun day, everyone had a good time.”
This year, the event awarded those best dressed and highest fundraising individuals and teams.

“We had a group called ‘The Mothercluckers’, they came dressed as chickens and won best team costume. We also had a prize for best dog costume and the dogs that belonged to The Mothercluckers – Waffles and Uno – won that as well,” Ms Rein said.
“A woman named Sandy came as a mammogram machine, she came with her daughter Maddi, and she won a prize for that costume.

“We had a lady, Victoria, who came as wonder woman and walked the 2kms in stiletto boots and we had the top fundraisers. Michelle Champion was our individual top fundraiser with $1312 and our top fundraiser team was Amanda’s Legacy who raised $3526.”
Ms Rein thanked the community for its support of the cause and encouraged them to join again next year.
“I hope everyone had a great day and we’re hoping they’ll be back next year because we’ll be coming back,” she said.
Last year $45,000 was raised.
