Raiders dominate Crusaders

AFTER a nail-biting season launch for the Port Douglas Reef Raiders, when they went down to the Northern Beaches Mudcrabs by three points, they have redeemed themselves with a 46-19 win against Southside Crusaders.

In front of a packed home ground, the Raiders gave their fans exactly what they wanted.

Raiders inside centre Ryan Connors scored three tries, setting the tempo for the team, while Joe O’Leary, Kane Gray, Rian O’Flynn and Jean Valette all scored tries of their own.

Raiders coach Richard Johnston said “it was a great win and team effort

“It definitely gives us something to work with moving forward.”

The Raiders now see their biggest challenge yet, when they host the five-time defending premier JCU Mariners at home.

Earlier the Tablelands Reds reserves side hosted the red hot Mariners.

The Reds stunned Mariners in a 20-7 victory, giving the squad a huge momentum boost to kick off their season. Reds left wing Mesake Vakalala was the star of the day, scoring two tries while Ilison Qaraniqio also scored one. Reds now lead the comp.
