Raiders dig deep for glory
THE Reef Raiders enjoyed a perfect weekend on the rugby field, claiming victories in both reserve grade and seniors to complete a clean sweep over Barron Trinity Bulls and strengthen their position as the finals race heats up.
The reserves set the tone with a dominant 44-10 victory, producing one of their most complete performances of the season.
The Raiders controlled the match from the opening whistle, combining disciplined defence with an effective attacking display to leave Barron with little opportunity to build momentum.
Their ability to capitalise on scoring chances ensured the contest was largely one-sided as they cruised to a convincing win.
The senior fixture proved to be a much tighter affair, with the Raiders holding off a determined Barron outfit to secure a hard-fought 21-19 victory.
In a contest that went right down to the wire, both teams traded points throughout the afternoon before the Raiders held their nerve in the closing stages to claim a valuable two-point win.
Captain Luke Edwards said the result was an important one as the club continued its push towards the finals. “It was a great home victory that was much needed to continue the team’s finals push,” Mr Edwards said.
The narrow win keeps the Raiders firmly in the hunt for a deep post season run, with the side now sitting third on the competition ladder after another crucial victory.
While the Raiders celebrated an important weekend, the competition leaders continue to set the benchmark.
The Tableland Reds remain undefeated this season, maintaining their perfect record as the team to beat heading into the second half of the campaign.
For the Raiders, however, the focus will be on building momentum after another strong showing across both grades.
The dominant reserve grade display and the resilience shown by the senior side in a pressure-filled finish will provide plenty of confidence.
