Raiders and Reds in top form
THE Port Douglas Reef Raiders and Tablelands Reds have continued their impressive rugby union campaigns, each securing back-to-back victories over the past fortnight to strengthen their positions on the competition ladder.
The Reef Raiders have enjoyed a flawless fortnight in the senior competition, collecting two valuable victories against fellow finals contenders.
In round 7, the Raiders prevailed 27-24 against the Northern Beaches Mudcrabs in one of the closest contests of the season.
The match remained in the balance until the final whistle, with the Raiders showing tremendous determination to secure the three-point win.
The following week, the Raiders backed up their efforts with a strong 33-27 victory over Southside.
In an entertaining, high-scoring affair, the Raiders produced some of their best attacking rugby of the season while remaining composed when Southside threatened to close the gap.
The consecutive victories have propelled the Reef Raiders into third place on the ladder, placing them firmly in the finals conversation.
For the Tablelands Reds, two narrow wins have highlighted the team’s resilience and ability to perform under pressure.
In round 7, the Reds edged out Cairns Penrhyn 21-18 in a tightly contested encounter.
With little separating the two sides throughout the match, the Reds found a way to hold their nerve in the closing stages and secure an important three-point victory.
The challenge was no easier in round 8, with Tablelands once again involved in a thriller.
Facing JCU, the Reds produced another determined performance to emerge with a 29-27 win.
The two-point result showcased the side’s composure and defensive resolve as they repelled a late JCU charge to remain unbeaten.
