Program ‘beyond football’
AFL CAIRNS has secured $247,900 in funding for its Northern Nest Graduate Program through the Queensland Government’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative. The program is delivered in partnership with Hawthorn’s AFLW team.
While AFL Cairns is widely recognised for its football competitions, the organisation says its mission extends beyond the field.
At its heart is a commitment to community and the development of young people.
Now in its seventh year, the Northern Nest Graduate Program reflects that commitment by focusing on well-being, personal growth and career readiness.
The initiative supports Queensland residents aged 15 and over who are no longer enrolled in school.
It offers life skills, job readiness training, cultural connection and mental health support, all anchored in the power of sport and community networks.
AFL Cairns general manager Craig Lees said the program went “beyond football” in helping young people find direction, build resilience and feel connected.
“We thank the Queensland Government for supporting this initiative and recognising its importance in shaping the confidence of our future leaders through connection, confidence and community,” he said.
Marcus McGregor-Cassody has been appointed to oversee the Northern Nest Graduate Program.
He will play a key role in supporting learners, liaising with delivery partners Thrive & Connect and Major Training and ensuring the program delivers life-changing opportunities for young people in the community.
The funding will allow AFL Cairns to employ a dedicated community manager to coordinate the program and liaise with delivery partners.
Participants will receive a Certificate I qualification through Major Training (RTO 6139) and have opportunities to gain other industry-relevant certificates.
Wraparound support, mentorship and engagement in community projects will be led by Thrive & Connect Australia.
Students will also have access to world-class gym facilities, nutritious daily meals, transport and support to obtain their driving licence.
The program targets a diverse range of participants, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, women re-entering the workforce, veterans, mature job seekers and individuals from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
Places are limited, with the first intake scheduled to begin on 7 October and participation is free of charge.
