Pride’s season kicks off
THE Kenfrost Homes Northern Pride launches their 2026 campaign this Sunday when they host PNG Hunters at Stan Williams Park, with new head coach Sam Williams set to take charge for the first time.

The trial kicks off at 4pm on Sunday 15 February and will be followed by a second pre-season clash against the NQ Cowboys Young Guns at Barlow Park on Saturday 21 February 2026 at 5.30pm, with free entry for fans.
Mr Williams said the opening trial would be critical in shaping his round one side.
“Certainly, from a coach’s point of view, we’ve seen enough through training now, so we need to see them play now and there’s a lot of opportunities and jerseys up for grabs, so it’s really important,” he said.
“This Sunday, at 4pm, I’m going to learn a lot about a lot of players and that’s what we need to see.”
He said competitive instinct could not be replicated in the training paddock.
“You can’t replicate a game, that competitive instinct. Do you want to win? Do you want to compete for the ball? Do you want to run someone down?,” Mr Williams said. “At the end of the day, you want to win football games, so we’ll find out about players.”
Several emerging locals will be under close watch, including Jimmy Frazer.
“He’s had a big off-season. He’s barely missed a session and he’s one of those players I’m really excited to see,” Mr Williams said of Mr Frazer.
On the broader group, he added: “They’re fighting for positions and they’ve all got different strengths.”
Mr Williams expects a physical challenge from the PNG Hunters.
“You know what the PNG players are going to bring. You know they’re physical, they’re built well,” he said.
“But it’s not really about that for us this week. It’s about us and our preparation.”
Beyond the senior squad, elite pathways manager Colin Wilkie said the club’s development focus remains central despite a short six-game junior season.
“Whilst the pathway season is only six games, there’s a lot of things to look forward to this year in regards to the Northern Pride,” Mr Wilkie said.
He said the four-month pre-season had energised the wider group.
“It’s been four months, and now it’s exciting for not just the players, but the staff and also the families,” Mr Wilkie said.
With trials, pathway fixtures and representative opportunities approaching, the coming fortnight will shape both the Pride’s round one line-up and the next wave of northern talent.
