Pride raids Canberra
FORMER NRL playmaker Sam Williams has been appointed as Northern Pride’s head coach for the next two Hostplus Cup seasons.

Mr Williams, who played more than 100 first-grade games for the Canberra Raiders, will take over ahead of the 2026 pre-season. He has also enjoyed success as a captain-coach with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, leading the side to three minor premierships and two premierships over three years.
Northern Pride CEO Garreth Smith said Williams’ arrival was an essential step for the club.
“Sam understands the game at the highest level and has shown great ability in developing players and creating winning environments,” Mr Smith said.

“We are confident he will drive our Hostplus Cup program forward and continue to strengthen our pathways.”
Mr Williams said he was looking forward to the challenge in Far North Queensland.
“The Northern Pride has a proud history and a deep connection to its community. I’m honoured to be allowed to lead the club and work with such a talented group of players and staff,” he said.
“My focus will be on building a strong culture, developing local talent, and delivering success on the field for the people of Far North Queensland.”
The 33-year-old will move to Cairns with his family later this year before taking charge of the 2026 campaign.
