Potters get fired up

THE Cairns Potters Club 2025 open day will celebrate all things creative, when it opens its doors to the community this weekend, August 16-17.

Beautiful works on show, a chance to try ‘clay and play’, and much more at the Cairns Potters Club open day this weekend.
Beautiful works on show, a chance to try ‘clay and play’, and much more at the Cairns Potters Club open day this weekend.

The popular annual event showcases the artistic talents of Cairns potters, who share their unique techniques and have their remarkable work on sale.

Visitors can watch the potters at work, take part in ‘play with clay sessions’ and on Sunday morning experience the art of Raku firing.

A Raku firing is the fast firing in the club’s drum kiln, which goes from room temperature up to 1000 degrees Celsius. In less than an hour, the kiln is then opened and the glowing pots taken out and placed in the sawdust and paper (for reduction) or left to cool off in oxidation.

Information about the club, socialising with members and membership sign-up opportunities will also be available over the weekend.

The Cairns Potters Club is one of the longest running artists’ initiatives in Cairns, providing a studio, equipment and support for ceramicists for over 50 years.

Its membership has included a who’s who of successful artists through the decades and it continues to offer courses for beginners, through to technically advanced pottery and sculpture classes.

The open weekend will run between 10am and 4pm on both days at the clubhouse at 28a Grove St, Cairns.
