Port’s double whammy fun
LAST weekend saw two very colourful events take place in Port Douglas, with the Neighbourhood Centre’s 70s-80s bingo night at the Port Douglas Community Centre and the Mossman Show Ball at the Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort.

The Mossman Show Ball returned last Saturday as a lead up to the Mossman Show on 19-20 July.
Once again it proved to be a huge success.
Last year, the fundraising event, which also celebrates the Douglas Shire’s young rural ambassadors, was held at the Mossman Shire Hall, returning after a hiatus of over 25 years.
The evening was warmly welcomed by many members of the Douglas Shire as it was seen as an opportunity to come together in the wake of major change, honour the past and embrace the future.
With the venue shifted to the Sheraton in Port Douglas, the night certainly did not fail to delight with a turnout of over 200 people.
The evening was also seen as a chance to ensure that the region’s agricultural heritage is not forgotten, while encouraging younger generations to take an active role in shaping what comes next.
As with last year’s grand occasion, I had the pleasure of donning an outfit donated by the NicNak Shed in Port Douglas.
After parading the garment around for a good part of the evening, it went under the hammer and raised $260. The popular jumpsuit was ultimately bought by local business owner Angelo Marano.

One key purpose of the special evening was to recognise and celebrate the Shire’s young rural ambassadors, motivated young people who represent the next generation of rural leaders.
With the agricultural industry evolving, these young front runners will play a crucial role in shaping the future and the show ball helped shine a light on their potential and contributions.
Event organiser Lara Balzarolo was impressed with the support.
“The event was a wonderful success, with the incredible support of our sponsors, volunteers and everyone who attended,” she said.
“It was fantastic to see the community come together in support of our young rural ambassadors.”
“With the Savannah in The Round auction and the sale of the fabulous white dress, we raised $720.
“We’re already looking forward to next year, to be held in Mossman, when we’ll be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Mossman Show.
“It promises to be a very special occasion and we’re determined to make it our biggest and best show yet”.
Douglas Shire Mayor Lisa Scomazzon described the ball as a special evening.
“The Mossman Show Ball continues to go from strength to strength and congratulations must go to the organisers for taking the event to the next level,” she said. “The Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort proved to be a fantastic venue and helped create a memorable evening for everyone involved.
“It was also a pleasure to meet the Mossman Show youth ambassadors and see the passion and enthusiasm they have for both the show and the wider community.
“These impressive young people are outstanding representatives and their commitment bodes well for the future of this iconic local event.

“The show ball is a wonderful opportunity to bring the community together and build excitement ahead of the Mossman Show itself.
“I encourage everyone to get behind the show and support the volunteers and organisers who work so hard to make it such a success.”

On the previous night of this busy weekend, Friday 3 July saw the return of the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre’s bingo night.
Last year the music theme was 1980s music and dress, but this year the evening transformed back in time to the 1960s and 1970s.
“The Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre was alive with music, laughter and dancing at its 60s and 70s music bingo night, with a fantastic community turnout,” said Belinda Fischer, Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre coordinator.
“Guests embraced the theme, with Boey F. and Toni H. taking home the best dressed male and female prizes respectively,” she said.
“The popular cent sale raffles were a highlight of the evening, with attendees delighted by the variety of prizes on offer.
Overall, guests described the event as an amazing night with great food and excellent organisation.
The Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre would like to thank everyone who attended and helped make the evening such a memorable success.
The total amount of funds raised is yet to be confirmed but expected to be several hundreds of dollars.
Well, I’m off for a sit down after a hectic weekend, so for now it’s Gazza signing out.
